I know that I'm German when I start eating this food. My heavens, I love cabbage in any form, but this braised cabbage is my all time favorite.
You can add some bacon bits or goat cheese for variety. I like mine just plain old braised. It is better the longer it sits so I've been known to cook it in the oven and then put it in the crock pot for a long, slow warming. It's one of those foods you can prep in advance and it tastes better as it sits.
Add the vinegar, water, butter and sugar to a dutch oven. Heat for about 5 minutes until the sugar is dissolved. Add chopped red cabbage and chopped onion. Stir to combine all ingredients and cover
Braise in oven for 2 hours. Stir every half hour or so. If the liquid evaporates completely, just add another 1/4 cup water.
Recipe Note
Serve with Braised Short Ribs and Creamy Polenta. This is true love on a dinner plate.
You can make this in advance and heat it up when you are ready to serve. It is an easy dish to prepare in advance.
