Ingredients

1 cup masoor dal, rinsed

4 cups water

2 tomatoes, chopped

1 teaspoon turmeric powder

½ teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon butter or ghee

1 small red onion, sliced

3 garlic cloves, sliced

Pinch of hing

Pinch of red chili powder

1 jalapeno or small chili, sliced

¼ cup cilantro, chopped

1 small lime, juiced

Cooking the dal
In a cast iron or heavy pan, add the rinsed lentils, water, tomatoes, turmeric and salt.
Bring the liquid to a boil then lower to a simmer and place the lid on the pan. Cook for 20 minutes.
Once the lentils are finished cooking, lightly mash until smooth.
Cooking the tadka
The tadka will be stirred into the mashed lentils when they are finished cooking.
In a small fry pan, add the butter, sliced onion and garlic and cook until the onion is slightly browned.
Add the hing and chili powder into the cooked onions and turn off burner. Set aside.
When the lentils are finished cooking and mashed, add the cooked onion mixture to the lentils.
For the topping
Add the sliced jalapeno and cilantro. Add the juice from one lime and stir to combine.
Serve with warm rice.e
